The Gastroenterology/Hepatology Fellowship Program

The overall goal of the GI/Hepatology fellowship program is to provide indepth training and education relating to the treatment of all disgestive and liver related diseases, and meet the requirements and obtain subspecialty certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The fellowship in GI/Hepatology at UAB is a 3 year program, and is available to all physicians who have completed residency training in internal medicine.

Located in Birmingham, Alabama, UAB serves as a major regional medical center for the state as well as the southeast.  This allows us to provide substantial experience to trainees, who will be working within the UAB Health System, which includes rotations at the Kirklin Clinic, the UAB Hospital, and the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
 
 Fellowship Training

During the 3 years of training, each fellow is required to successfully complete 2 years of clinical and 1 year of research training in GI/Hepatology. There are several additional opportunities available to member of our fellowship program. These include additional research time (2 years of research (VAS Scholars Program or T-32 NIH-NRSA program) +2 years of clinical experience), mentorships or guidance in one of our specialized centers or programs.

The information below will provide you with an outline of the requirements, responsibilities, and training that you will receive throughout your fellowship training:

  • Year 1
    • Obtain clinical expertise in GI/Liver Disease:
      • 3 Months University Hospital GI Ward Service
        2 Months University Hospital Hepatology Ward Service
        3 Months University Hospital GI Consult Service
        3 Months VA Endoscopy/Consult Service
        1 Month Outpatient Procedure
  • Year 2
    • Obtain the basic skills for completing clinical research
      • 12 Months-MSPH Program in Clinical Research (UAB School of Public Health)
  • Year 3
    • Continue clinical expertise in GI/Liver Disease
      • 7 Months VA Endoscopy/Consult
        3 Months University Hospital (2 GI, 1 Hepatology) Ward Service
        1 Month University Hospital GI consult service
        1 Month Outpatient Procedures

In addition to training, fellows also participating in rotating call, as well as receive 3 weeks of vacation time each fellowship year.

We will be participating in the match for 2009 & 2010 applicants. We are accepting applications through ERAS.
