Charles O. Elson, III, MD

Dr. Elson joined UAB in 1987 and served as the Director of the Division of Gastroenterology until 2001. He currently serves as a Professor of Medicine, the Basil Hirschowitz endowed Chair in Gastroenterology, and the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine at UAB.  Dr. Elson is Board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology, and has over 30 years of experience treating GI related disorders.  He is also active in numerous medical related societies and professional organizations, including American Gastroenterological Association and the American Federation of of Clinical Research, among many others.  He is also a member of the editoral board for the journal of Clinical Immunology.  Dr. Elson is active in both the Faculty clinical practice, focusing on the treatment of inflammatory related gastroenterological conditions, and research at UAB.  His research focus is on the regulation of mucosal immune responses and how the regulation relates to maintenance of normal homeostasis, and how it contributes to states of chronic intestinal inflammation, and is a collaborative investigator in the Mucosal HIV and Immunobiology Center (MHIC).
