The UAB Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology is dedicated to providing patients with comprehensive clinical, educational, and research services for all diseases related to the digestive tract and liver.

Our faculty members are active in teaching, patient care, and research at UAB. Faculty teaching responsibilities include daily interaction with fellows, residents, and medical students in University Hospital, Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) and The Kirklin Clinic. They also provide inpatient, consultative, and outpatient services at each one of these facilities. Each year, we continue to expand our faculty practice with new patients and updated servics.

In addition to the faculty clinical practice, our Divisision boasts one of the most comprehensive clinical and basic science research programs in the Southeast. Facutly members actively participate and provide leadership in the UAB Liver Center, UAB Muscosal HIV & Immunobiology Center (MHIC), and the UAB Pancreaticobiliary Center (PBC). Faculty members also utilize the division-wide clinical research program (GHCRP), which provides a specialized infrastructure to conduct clinical research.

Currently, the Division faculty practice is located on the 4th Floor of The Kirklin Clinic in the Gastroenterology/Hepatology Clinic. If you are interested in scheduling an appointment, please call 205-996-4744.

Dr. Bloomer to receive AASLD 2009 Distinguished Service Award

Joseph Bloomer, MD

The American Association for the Study of Liver Disease recently named Joseph Bloomer, MD (Professor, Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology; Director, UAB Liver Center) as the recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Service Award.  The AASLD Distinguished Service Award recognizes an individual’s sustained service to the community of hepatology researchers and clinicians. 


UAB Participating in the Episod Study

imgBThe Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology is currently a participating site in the Episod studies, sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).  The focus of the study is to evaluate predicting factor and intervention in the treatement of sphincter of oddi dysfunction (SOD).

Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) Guided-Celiac Plexus Neurolysis (CPN)

Watch Mohamad A. Eloubeidi, M.D., M.H.S., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.G. (Associate Professor) performing an Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) Guided-Celiac Plexus Neurolysis (CPN) more commonly known as a EUS-CPN.

Currently, Dr. Eloubeidi is conducting research to evaluate the efficacy of the procedure in decreasing the severity of abdominal pain for patients suffering from pancreatic cancer.

UAB Division of Gastroenterology/Hepatology 50th Anniversary

The UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology celebrated its 50th anniversary on May 29, 2009, with a festschrift honoring Dr. Basil I. Hirschowitz in the UAB West Pavilion Conference Center, which was followed by a seated dinner at The Club.

The festschrift included academic lectures by Joel Edward Richter, MD, Temple University; Angel I. Lanas, MD, PhD, University of Zaragoza, Spain; and Don Powell, MD, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, who is the third Basil I. Hirschowitz Visiting Professor.

UAB & GI faculty members ranked among best in US

C. Mel Wilcox, MD, Charles O. Elson, III, MD, Robert Slaughter, MD, Christoper Truss, MD and Joseph Bloomer, MD were named among the nation’s best doctors in the 2009-2010 edition of The Best Doctors in America, which is a produced by an independent, knowledge-based, medical referral service located in Aiken, S.C.

 The UAB Hospital was also ranked as one of the America’s Top Hospitals in the US News & World Reports  annual report, which was released earlier this year.
